U=BOAT OPENS FIRE

BRITISH VESSEL ESCAPES SAFETY OF THE COULMORE 'United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlybi) (Received Nov. 3, 11 a.m.) GIBRALTAR, Nov 2 It is officially stated that the British steamer Egba escaped from a submarine 240 miles east of Madiera. The U-boat opened fire but the Egba was not hit. WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 The Camperdown radio informed the coastguard cutter Bibb that the steamer Coulmore, which had sent a call for help, was safe. Despite the report of safety considerable scepticism was felt as to the validity of the radio message, and it was doubted if the Coulmore had been in direct communication, the coastguard continuing its search. Later the American Press stated that the Coulmore itself reported its safety, and the search therefore was suspended. The vessel gave its position as just within the neutrality belt.
