“NOT OF THE BEST”
COOKING FACILITIES ! POSITION AT HOPU HOPU I “From what we have seen the food | in the camp is good but the cooking ; arrangements are not of the best,” said the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Leantr of the Opposition, after inspecting the Hopu Hopu camp yesterday afternoon. “Apart from that, however, I feel that the men are well cared for and no parents need worry for the welfare of their sons going into i camp.” j Mr Hamilton, in the course of his visit, watched the men receiving i their instruction and also inspected I the Brenn gun and watched a Brenn i carrier operating. , Later he was shown through the ! tents, the mess-rooms, and the cooki houses. He found the tents and mess-rooms to be in excellent order, while the facilities for storing the meat were ideal, being particularly clean and well arranged. In the cook-houses, however, the men were working under rather difficult conditions, the building being small and consequently almost unbearably hot.
There was very little room for the cooks to move about. “It should be understood, of course,” said Mr Hamilton, “that the camp was built for 1500 men and now holds about 2500. No doubt the facilities provided at Papakura, to which the majority of men will move in a few days’ time, will be a vast improvement on those existing here.” The party was met at camp headquarters by Major J. M. Allen, M.P. for Hauraki, who is in camp at Hopu Hopu.
