Dearer Meat in South

The price of meat will be raised by one penny a pound in Dunedin and suburbs from to-day. This increase is authorised by the Food Controller and is the outcome of a full investigation of the meat trade in Dunedin by an officer of his department, who made a thorough investigation of conditions and the price of meat ruling in this city. It is represented that the advance in price that is now being made will not be sufficient to cover continually rising costs at the Burnside market. A further increase in mutton prices was recorded at yesterday’s sales. Patriotic Maoris Many cases have occurred in which two or three from one family are offering their services in the Maori battalion. The record of one family, however, is outstanding, no fewer than 10 members having enrolled for service. This is the Te Hau family, of Muriwai, East Coast, which was represented by four sons in the Maori pioneer battalion in 1914-18. One son was killed in action and of the three who returned two survive. Both have volunteered again, and with them are eight brothers or nephews.
