FOOD OF SOLDIERS
EXPERTS TO REPORT NUTRITIONAL COUNCIL COMMITTEE APPOINTED A committee to consider the question of the food to be supplied to soldiers in military camps throughout New Zealand and to prepare a report for the Government has been appointed as the result of a conference of experts called in Wellington on Monday by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry.
The conference was the outcome of a meeting in Wellington on Sunday of the New Zealand Women’s Food Value League. Those present at the conference included Colonel F. T. Bowerbank, Director-General of Medical Services; Colonel S. H. Crump, Quartermaster-General; Dr. T. R. Ritchie, of the Health Department; Dr. M. B. M. Tweed, of the Plunket Society; Mr C. R. Bach, in charge of the physical fitness campaign organised by the Department of Internal Affairs; Miss E. M. Lorrimer, chairman of the Women’s Food Value League; and Dr. Guy B. Chapman, of Auckland, founder of the league.
After discussing the subject of soldiers’ food for two hours, the conference appointed the following committee, which will prepare a report for presentation to the Nutritional Council already set up by the Government: Colonel F. T. Bowerbank, Colonel S. H. Crump, Dr. M. B. M. Tweed, Mr C. R. Bach and Miss E. M. Lorrimer. M.O.’S APPOINTED SECOND ECHELON A number of medical officers has been selected to serve with the Second Echelon of the Second New Zealand Division. They will report on December 2 to the Burnham military camp and will be attached to the sth Field Ambulance, New Zealand Medical Corps. The officers are:—LieutenantColonel H. S. Kenrick (0.C.), Major A. L. Noakes (0.C., A Company), Captain T. de Clive-Lowe (0.C., B Company), Lieutenants W. M. Duncan (Q.M.), F. J. Furkert, G. B. Palmer and R. F. Wilson.
Lieutenant Wilson is at present Camp Medical Officer at Ngaruawahia. In addition, Lieutenant W. G. Gray is to go to Ngaruawahia on November 8 and will later proceed to Burnham, reporting with the others on December 2. Captain A. A. Macdonald, of Auckland, is going to the 23rd Wellington Battalion and Lieutenant L. S. Rogers, of Te Awamutu, is to go to the 22nd Auckland Battalion. TO BECOME OFFICERS 26 MEN FOR TRAINING (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Wednesday Twenty-six of the men who have been serving with the territorial forces on coastal battery work in Auckland have been selected for a special course of training with a view to bringing the number of officers up to establishment. The men entered the district school at Narrow Neck on Labour Day and at the end of six weeks will be examined for fitness to receive commissions.
Of those selected the following 16 are from the 13th Heavy Battery:— S. Catchpole, A. O. Dryland, J. W. Easteal, J. B. Elliott, F. A. Knight, I. G. Laurenson, A. M. S. Mason, R. G. Murray, H. C. Napier, G. E. Price, K. N. Price, G. M. Primrose, E. M. Pritchard, p. McL. Swan, G. O. Wiles, S. R. Young. The following nine are from the 18th Anti-Aircraft Battery:—G. F. Alpe, J. M. Ewen, E. C. Foot, P. F. Hewitt, D. M. Hooper, G. A. Lovell, S. Melling, F. D. Robertshaw, P. Woolley.
