WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP ARMSTRONG BEATS PACHO (United Press Assn.—Etec. Tel. Copyrtn-ht) NEW YORK, Oct. 31 The negro boxer Henry Armstrong retained the world welterweight title against Bobby Pacho with a technical knock-out in the fourth round of a bout at Denver, Colorado. BOXERS SUSPENDED GALENTO, SCHMELING, THOMAS INQUIRY BY THE GOVERNOR (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) CHICAGO, Oct. 30 The Illinois State Athletic Commission has barred the boxers, Tony Galento, Max Schmeling and Harry Ihomas, and the boxing managers, Joe Jacobs and Nate Lewis, from staging further fights, pending an inquiry by the Governor. The Chicago Tribune published alleged affidavits in which Thomas says that, by arrangement between Lewis and Jacobs, his fights against Schmeling in 1937 and Galento in 1938 were faked in order to build up reputations of challengers seeking bouts with the world’s champion, Joe Louis. Thomas states that he received 8500 dollars for taking a

“dive” against Schmeling and was promised 6000 dollars for similar tactics in his bout with Galento.

Galento knocked out Thomas in the third round at Philadelphia on November 16, 1938, and Schmeling defeated Thomas on a technical knockout in the eighth round at New York on December 13, 1937.
