CHESS MATCH
WIN FOR AUCKLAND SOUTH AUCKLAND BEATEN VERY CLOSE CONTEST The annual chess match, between, the combined South Auckland and Auckland Clubs was held at Te Kauwhata and after some very close and interesting games Auckland won by 10 games to 9. Speaking on behalf of the Combined South Auckland Clubs, Mr A. W. Saxby welcomed the visitors and paid a tribute to the sporting manner in which the contest was conducted. The very even nature of the games indicated that the standard of chess in the Waikato was very good. Mr R. E. Bayertz replied on behalf of the Auckland Clubs and thanked the South Auckland clubs for their hospitality.
This closes the 1939 season in Hamilton. Great improvement, especially among the new players was shown during the year, which was one of the most successful in the club’s history. The principal trophy, the Dolly Varden Trophy, was won by the Rev. N. Barclay. The following are the results of the matches between Auckland and South Auckland (South Auckland players mentioned first). —Rev. N. Barclay lost to D. I. Jones; A. W. Saxby lost to C. G. Lennard; A. Blencarn lost to R. E. Bayertz; F. Hirst beat A. L. Fletcher; H. Stayte lost to Dr. T. G. Sharp; G. Boyes lost to Mrs Sharp; G. F. Lane beat H. O. Browne; W. I. Harper lost to J. Adkins; W. J. Tabb beat E. N. Barrett; J. A. Fowke beat D. Jack; L. Gordon lost to G. Edwards; W. Fink beat W. Jenkins; H. B. Thomas beat Mrs W. Jenkins; J. H. Vowless beat J. D. Bredecker; Rev. Zimmerman lost to C. H. Treadgold; K. L. Harvey lost to R. Barker; R. E. Harvy lost to W. R. Redman; A. N. Simondson beat F. C. Utting; S. Sofield beat F. Stubbs.
