NEW HOTEL BUILDING EXCELLENT APPOINTMENTS BEST OF MATERIALS USED The rompletion of the Commercial Hotel as one of the finest and most up-to-date hotels in the Dominion has only been made possible by the cooperation of many firms, all of. whom have carried out their contracts in masterly fashion. The most, important work was the construction of this large, modern building, which should do much to alleviate the previous laek of sufficient accommodation in the town. The Contractor The contractor responsible for the erection of the hotel was Mr T. Clements, of Otahuhu. Mr Clements has his own staff of experienced joiners, carpenters, steel workers, concrete workers, roof fixers, wall tilers, bricklayers, plasterers, paperhangers, painters and glaziers and he was thus responsible for the complete building of this fine new structure. Cartage of Materials In addition to the large amount of cartage work undertaken by the contractor’s own vehicles the Hamilton firm of Hopkinson and Gibson was engaged to cart all the sand and shingle, which was used in the construction of this new' hotel. This, in itself, was a huge undertaking. The Interior Furnishings One of the major works in connection with equipping the hotel was the installation of the comfortable and luxurious settees, lounge and occasional chairs and mattresses on specially constructed spiral sprung bases and this work was carried out by Messrs Andrews & Clark, of Auckland. The large contract of making the many bedroom suites was entrusted to Messrs Barton and Ross Ltd., of Hamilton. These suites are beautiful in the extreme and are a splendid example of the craftsman's art. Every conceivable accessory for the convenience and comfort of the guests has been incorporated in these modernistic designs. Messrs Barton and Ross Ltd. also built the office and dining room occasional furniture and were also entrusted with the laying of the entire carpeting scheme. These machines are noted for their lasting efficiency, strength and silence and were supplied by Harold E. Baigent, Master Agent, 518/519 Cooke’s ‘Building, Auckland. Cleansers, Disinfectants and Polishes An important side-line in connection with the installation of the furniture was the supply of cleansers, disinfectants and polishes and the Auckland firm of Easton Products supplied their well-known brand “Liksol.” Table Crockery The table crockery was supplied by Messrs Walker and Hall, Limited, Sheffield, England, through their Auckland branch.
