REBATE PROVIDED TOTAL OF lOd A GALLON (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Friday A rebate of 6d a gallon on motor spirit used for any purpose other than fuel for road motor vehicles is provided in the Customs Act Amendment Act which was passed by the Legislative Council to-day. Motor spirit for agricultural tractors and other farm and industrial purposes will receive a further rebate of 4d, while petrol used in aircraft and fishing vessels will be covered by a re- | bate of Is. Every application for a refund is to be accompanied by such declarations or documentary evidence as may be required by the registrar and any person who furnishes false information is liable to a fine of £SO. Applications for refunds are to be made in respect of the periods ending respectively on the last day of March, June, September and December in any year. Except in special cases, applications are to be made in the month following these periods or within two months of the close of the period. A clause also states that if the Minister is satisfied that motor spirit has been or is intended to be used for manufacturing or scientific purposes and that it has been treated so as to render it unfit for motor vehicles, he may exempt it from duty. The second reading debate on the I Bill in the Legislative Council to-day was mainly on the question of taxing petrol used by farmers for production. A suggestion made by the Hon. J. McLeod (Taranaki) that tobacco, cigarettes and beer sold in camp canteens should be duty free was promised consideration by the Leader of the Council, the Hon. D. Wilson. on with their voluntary parades five nights a week, and it is estimated that 400 will present themselves for medical examination when the time comes,” concluded Mr Harawira.
