KEEN MARKET

STORE CATTLE SALE MORRINSVILLE VALUES ALL CLASSES SELL WELL All classes of stock were in keen request at the weekly stock sale at Morrinsville yesterday and I the prices paid in all sections were indicative of confidence in future trading. The feature of yesterday’s sale was the offering of 500 three-year-old store steers from East Coast stations. These cattle were wellgrown, quality Herefords and Polled Angus, and competition throughout the sale was animated with values usually substantially in advance of recent rates. A large bench of buyers followed the sale of store cattle and it was soon evident that values were going to be better than was generally anticipated. The first pen of Herefords sold at £9 15s and half-way through the first row £lO was obtained for a quality pen. Over the early sales very few pens sold below £8 10s, but later in the sale competition was a little quieter and some vendors obtained good, but slightly smaller cattle from £7 to £B. Yesterday’s sale, which was actually the first spring cattle fair, has set a higher standard of values for stores than many would have prophesied. Light Beef Supply Beef was in light supply and there were very few quality cattle on offer. A few extra heavy cows and heifers sold from £ll to £ll 15s and other heavy sorts from £8 to £9. Lighter sorts, which comprised the greater proportion of the entry, sold from £4 to £6 14s. Boners were in very keen demand. Although quality was below standard, there was an animated demand for dairy cattle and values were very firm, while yearling Jersey heifers sold very keenly. A light entry of fat sheep was in keen request and a clearance was effected at fully late rates. Good hoggets sold readily from 20s to 26s 6d, while from 16s 3d to 18s 9d was given for fat ewes. For a pen of shorn wethers 25s 9d was given, while forward conditioned sorts made 19s 7d. An average entry of fat pigs sold at very firm rates, baconers realising to 795. A particularly animated demand was shown for store pigs and prices were the highest for some time, large stores selling to as high as 495.
