SOCIAL NOTES

Miss Nell McMiken, Hamilton, who is on a trip to England, has recently completed a tour of Scotland and intends visiting relatives there for some time. * * * * Mrs O. Svenson, Hamilton, left today for a visit to Sydney. Miss M. Richmond, Auckland, will take up her duties on Monday of private secretary to Mr D. V. Bryant, Hamilton. Miss Maud Dempster, Hamilton, is visiting relatives in Perthshire, Scotland. ♦ * * * Outstanding success in the Royal Academy dancing examinations, held recently in New Zealand, has been attained by one of Taranaki’s leading dancing teachers, Beryl Quay, A.R.A.D., formerly Miss Beryl King, of Hamilton. She will leave for Australia early in the new year to further her studies at the Frances Scully Academy at Sydney. Taranaki residents are soon to be given an opportunity of seeing this talented dancer, when she appears for a season of three nights at the Opera House, New Plymouth. Organised by St. Peter’s Ladies’ Guild, in aid of church funds, a successful children’s plain and fancy dress party was held in St. Peter’s Hall recently. A jolly time was spent in games and competitions under the capable guidance of Mrs H. C. Ross, Mrs Kear being the pianist. Several children entertained with items and a delicious tea was served. Miss Jean Batten has numerous friends in Scandinavian countries. She has lately been visiting Copenhagen, from which centre she flew to Sweden in her own aeroplane, and stayed there with friends (wrote a London correspondent on August 29). From Sweden she went to Finland to make contact with other people whom she knows. She returned to Stockholm and flew on to Oslo on her way back to England, where she arrived this week. New Zealanders will be interested to know that her book, “My Life,” has been translated into Swedish—in which it has met with a good demand—and lately it has been published in French after appearing in serial form in Petit Parisien two months ago.
