VALUE FOR HORSES
ANNUAL OHAUPO FAIR LATE RATES REPEATED One of the oldest sales in the Waikato, the annual Ohaupo Horse Fair, one of the few remaining fixtures now held at what was formerly the district’s most important stock selling centre, is still among the foremost fixtures connected with the horse trade in the district. Values for horses have shown a slight falling away during the past two years, but the 180 horses of all classes that came forward at this year's fair, which concluded at the Ohaupo saleyards yesterday, aroused keen interest and very satisfactory trade was experienced, with values usually representing fully late Waikato rates. The fair was conducted by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. Brokens Sell Well The fair opened with the sale of unbroken draughts, the best of them selling from £ls to £l7 and other fair sorts from £7 10s to £l4. Brokens met with a steady demand, the tops selling from £3O to £37 and other good utility farm sorts from £2O to £26. Purchases of other draughts on the first day were made from £9 to £l6 10s. The top price of £37 was given by Mr H. Schisker, of Putaruru, for an entry from Mr J. Woods, of Morrinsville. For one of the consignment from a southern vendor, Mr T. Moore, of Christchurch, a buyer from Otorohanga, Mr R. G. Mathews, paid £36. Although the tone of the market was quiet at times, a fairly consistent demand was shown for draughts yesterday, the most satisfactory sales ranging from £23 to £3l. Good useful hacks met with brisk inquiry, quality entries changing hands from £ll to £ls 10s and others from £3 to £lO.
