INCREASES GIVEN EMERGENCY FINANCE PARTICULARS OF CHARGES (By Telegrapn.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday Following: upon the announcement of the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, in the House of Representatives on Tuesday nigrht on the decision to increase letter postage as a means of raising additional revenue for war purposes, and Mr Nash’s statement that there would be some adjustment of other rates, the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones, to-day furnished particulars of the general increases that would apply from October 1. Commenting generally on the increases, the Minister said that the public might not be aware that the postal, telegraph and telephone rates they enjoyed in New Zealand were in many instances the lowest in the world. Even as increased, he said, the rates did not compare unfavourably with those in other countries, and he was sanguine that the increases would be accepted by the nublic as a necessary contribution in the emergency now obtaining. The New Rates Particulars of the principal changes are as follows: Postal Branch Letters, inland 2d for the first ounce, Id each additional halfounce. Empire.—2d first half-ounce, Id each additional half-ounce. Foreign.—3d first half-ounce, Id each additional half-ounce. Inland by Air.—3d each halfounce, late fee 2d additional to postage. Registration fee, 4d additional to postage. Express delivery fee, 6d a mile. Postcards.—lnland, Id; overseas, l£d. Commercial papers, Id first 4 ounces, id each additional 2 ounces. Printed papers, non-advertising circulars, Christmas cards, etc., Id first 4 ounces, \ each additional 2 ounces. Newspapers.—lnland, id each 4 ounces; Empire, id each 3 ounces; Foreign, id each 2 ounces (no change). Library Exchanges.—id each 4 ounces. Packets.—ld each 2 ounces, with a minimum of 3d. Parcels.—3lb, 8d; 71b, Is 3d; 141 b, 2s; 211 b, 2s 9d; 281 b, 3s 6d. Postal Notes.—An all-round increase of Id in poundage. Money-order Commission.—ld for each £l, with a minimum of 6d. Inland Telegrams Ordinary.—Weekdays, 8d for six words or fewer, Id for each additional word; Sundays and holidays, rate and a-half. Letter Telegrams.—ls 2d for 24 words, or fewer, Id for each additional two words. Urgent Fee, Bd. Overseas Telegrams and Radio Telegrams.—2d additional on each message. One more additional on each message. Telephone Toll Calls.—An additional charge of Id for each 6d of toll charge for all calls costing more than 3d.
