WAITRESSES IN A.R.P.
London is going to miss many of the waitresses in teashops and restaurants who are ready to take their share in National Service. One finds that already some of them have been called up and that others are waiting to go on duty with the Auxiliary Fire Service or some other of London's defences. Some of the big firms are creating their own A.R.P. departments for the safety of their customers and of their own staffs. Lyons’, for instance, now nas more than 400 staff A.R.P. workers who are trained in first-aid and in antigas and fire drill. All its West End establishments, from restaurants to cafes, are prepared for an emergency and are working with the local A.R.P. authorities. Each has its own system of air-raid warnings and its large shelter. For the use in need of overseas visitors the Lyons hotels have reserve supplies of civilian respirators. I • !
