EFFECT OF WAR
TIMBER INDUSTRY BARTHOLOMEW COMPANY BONUS OF 1 PER CENT PAID “The results of the war on our industry are hard to estimate, but it will possibly result in a shortage of labour,” said Mr A. L. Tompkins, chairman of directors of the Bartholomew Land and Timber Company Limited, at the annual meeting in Hamilton this afternoon. “Private building,” added Mr Tompkins,” is still restricted owing to high costs. The Government’s rural building scheme has now been announced and it is hoped this will allow the use of certain grades not being used in the present house building programme. The Government expects to carry on with its building scheme, which will assist in maintaining demand. “A Controller of Timber has been appointed, with power to regulate cutting and delivery of timber.” Director Elected Satisfactory results of the past year had enabled a payment to the shareholders of a bonus of 1 per cent in addition to the usual dividend. The company’s plant had been well maintained and was working effectively. Reserves had been increased. The retiring director, Mr C. Sutcliffe, was re-elected, and Mr L. N. Ross was re-appointed auditor. Thanks were passed to the staff for their loyal co-operation throughout the year. The directors re-elected Mr A. L. Tompkins chairman for the ensuing year.
