SUFFERING CITY
UNSPEAKABLE INFERNO METHODICAL DESTRUCTION ESCAPING CROWDS KILLED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 28, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27 A Warsaw message headed “ 22nd day of siege ” states that Warsaw endured an unspeakable inferno in the last 24 hours. Bombing was almost continuous, coupled with heavy artillery fire. Incendiary bombs increased the number of fires, which were increasingly difficult to combat because of the lack of water.
Crowds of refugees escaping from burning and destroyed buildings through the bombed streets were killed or wounded by the thousand. Scenes of indescribable misery have become the daily routine. The troops, fighting with marked heroism, are successfully repulsing the enemy, but Warsaw is being destroyed methodically, one district after another.
The spirit of the population is unshaken, and its heroism wonderful.
The city hopes against hope that there will be a reply to her S.O.S. for assistance, and that she will receive ultimate deliverance so that a sacrifice so unprecedented throughout history will not have been in vain.
Citizens killed since noon on Monday number 2000. An epidemic is feared since shells have destroyed the last standing hospital. The city is almost razed to the ground.
Communications within the city have broken down owing to fires everywhere.
