NEW LIGHTING

MERCURY VAPOUR LAMPS INSTALLATION IN HAMILTON With a view to creating better illumination for the traffic in the main business area of Hamilton, the Borough Council is replacing the ordinary electric street lights with mercury vapour lamps. To cover the main street from No. 1 bridge to the traffic bridge, and the adjacent streets, about 100 lamps will be required. They will be hung from poles on the sides of the roads. The lamps have already been installed from No. 1 Bridge to Rostrevor Street and a number are in use in Collingwood Street. It is proposed that Collingwood Street, Ward Street and Hood Street will each have five of the lamps and that the remainder will be placed in Victoria Street. Alterations to some of the telephone lines and the installation ol several new poles will be necessary before the work is completed. The mercury vapour lamps, which have proved successful in several towns, give a wide field of fight and do not give the glare of the ordinary lignts.
