SCHOOLMASTER LEAVES

CAPTAIN L. I. DAY FAREWELLED The high esteem in which Captain L. I. Day is held by the students of the Hamilton Technical College was evidenced today when he was presented with a wristlet watch by the boys and girls of the college on the occasion of his departure for camp. Captain Day has been senior instructor in mathematics and science at the college for the past 16 years and is attached to the 16th Waikato Regiment, besides being officer commanding the College Cadet Corps. At the usual assembly in the college hall the principal, Mr W. Fraser, said the gathering was unique since the College was one of the youngest schools in the Dominion and had not yet had the experience of seeing its masters or old boys going on active service. He expressed his personal regret at losing the services of Captain Day, and said everyone present would hope to see him back on the staff again as soon as possible. The head prefect, J. Warrington, then presented Captain Day with a wristlet watch on behalf .of the students and paid a tribute to Captain Day’s work for the students, many of whom would feel that they were not merely farewelling an instructor but were parting from a real friend.

In thanking the students Captain Day said the past 16 had been among the happiest in his life and it was very hard to part from his long association with the college. He appealed to all the boys and girls to maintain and build up the traditions which the school had already establisned. This they could do by

carrying on their work :n the meantime, joining the Old Students’ Associations when they left school, and living a full life as real men and women according to those principles of fair play and justice for which the College had always stood. The function concluded with three cheers for Captain Day. Earlier in the week Captain Day was the guest of honour at an aoon tea tendered by the principal ana members of the staff.
