BRITAIN’S GREAT EFFORT PROTECTION OF POPULATION VITAL DEFENCE MEASURE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright)
LONDON, Sept. 25 The magnitude of Britain’s effort for the protection of her population against air attack is revealed in re-cently-disclosed particulars of one aspect of air raid precautions. Twenty square miles of corrugated steel are being produced by steel works in strategic positions over the whole of the United Kingdom for use by 2,500,000 people in their own gardens. Production of the first 1,000,000 shelters, which began in the middle of F ebruary was completed and the sr.elters were delivered by the second week in September. The rate has been increased from 1,000,000 in seven months to 1,500,000 in the same period. It is pointed out that this vital defence measure is not hampering the supply of armaments, for shelter requirements represent only about 3£ per cent, of the total production of all classes of British steel.
AIR RAID SHELTERS
VAULTS UNDER PAVEMENTS INCREASE IN LONDON (Official Wireless) RUGBY, Sept. 25 The city of Westminster has greatly extended the provision of air raid shelters by arranging for the public to have access to vaults under the pavements. Some 4400 such vaults have been prescribed as public shelters and will accommodate between 60,000 and 70,000 persons. There are in addition a number of vaults without direct access from the street and therefore open at present orfly to occupiers. These also will become public shelters when linked up with the vaults which can be entered from the street.
