PRICE OF BUTTER
; IXED AT 145/- A CWT. STATEMENT BY MERCHANTS The maximum retail price, ex store, ,of Empire, English and Contiental butters has been fixed at Is 7d per lb. The maximum wholesale prices of all kinds of butter had been revised and now stood at 145 s per cwt.
The present maximum rate of Empire butter of J4ss compares with the London equivalent of the New Zealand guaranteed level of 124 s 3d per cwt., which ruled last season. It is equal to approximately 17|d per lb., f.0.b., New Zealand ports, compared with last season’s guarantee of 14.89 d per lb., f.o.b. No announcement has yet been made regarding the level for the season which commenced on August 1.
The last quoted price for New Zealand butter before the outbreak of war ranged from 124 s to 125 s per cwt., and the retail value was then Is 2d to Is 3d per lb. It was pointed out by merchants yesterday that the previous maximum price of 1295, would not give a return equivalent to the guaranteed price when the increased freight charges and war risk insurances were taken into consideration.
