THRESHING MILLS

WORKING HOURS IN DISPUTE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Tuesday “When we saw the claims at first we were prepared to agree to the hours under the agreement, but since then war has been declared there will be hundreds and hundreds more acres taken over for grain this year. The Department of Agriculture has asked farmers to grow grain and do all types of cropping,” said Mr E. M. Langley for the employers, speaking against fixed hours in the Threshing Mill Employees, Chaff Cutters and Clovers and Shellers’ Dispute in Conciliation Council today. Even if they could have the hours abolished for the duration of the war, it would be something. They would agree to work in two shifts if the workers would alter their clause. They only wanted the restriction taken off the mills.

The employees’ assessors agreed to discuss the matter during luncheon, also the question of removing the restriction on the employment of youths under 18.
