GERMAN ADVANCE
MURDEROUS SHELL FIRE HISTORIC PLACES RUINED HEROIC DEFENCE CONTINUES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 25 The Germans have crossed the River Vistula between Modlin and Warsaw, thus cutting off Modlin from the capital, according to a communique issued by the German High Command. It is reported from Warsaw that German heavy artillery is continually shelling the capital and Modlin, states a 8.8. C. broadcast. The murderous fire has been kept up without an interval. No home in Warsaw has escaped damage. All historic places are ruined. In the past 24 hours 100 fires have broken out and several . thousand people have been killed. Apart from shelling, there were two German air raids during the day. Modlin is attacked from all sides, but the heroic defence continues. Polish reports state that attacks from the east of Warsaw were repulsed. The Poles claim that they carried out three surprise attacks during the night, west of the Vistula. A Berlin wireless broadcast, in Polish, French and Russian, stated: “Foreign diplomats, after their return from Warsaw, reported that armed individuals have detained 60 members of the Soviet Embassy, including 22 women and 23 children, in cellars, and badly damaged the Soviet Embassy. “The German Commander-in-Chief offers the Warsaw ComiViander-in-Chief the opportunity of giving these, and any other foreign diplomats in Warsaw at noon today, unhampered passage through the German lines.”
