INTOXICATED DRIVER
CARPENTER SENT TO GAOL (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Tuesday “So many of these cases are coming before the court—there were four arrests last week-end—that I think the only thing to consider is whether the sentences in such cases should not be increased,” said Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court, when sentencing to two weeks’ imprisonment Wilfred Victor Holliday, aged 38, carpenter, who pleaded guilty to a charge of intoxication while in charge of a motor car in Queen Street on Sunday night At 11.37 p.m., the police said, the car, driven in an erratic manner, collided with a safety zone. Nothing was previously known against Holliday. Defending counsel, Mr Matthews, said Holliday was employed by a contractor on emergency work for the Defence Department and his services were urgently required. He spent Saturday in the dentist’s chair and was feeling unwell on Sunday and took a little liquor. The collision occurred during rain and was not attributable to liquor. “I can see no reason for excluding this case from one where imprisonment should be ordered,” said the magistrate. Holliday's license was cancelled for two years.
