SAFETY OF THE CREWS FINN GOVERNMENT’S PROTEST (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 23 A German submarine sank the Finnish steamer Martti-Ragnar, of 2262 tons, in the Baltic. She was carrying a cargo of woodpulp to England. The submarine ordered the ship to stop, and the crew took to the boats, after which the Germans placed explosives aboard the steamer and sank her. The crew rowed all night and reached the shore this morning. The Finnish Government has protested to Germany in connection with the sinking of the Martti-Rag-nar. Two German submarines sank a second Finnish steamer, the Walma, of 1361 tons. The crew of 18 were saved. This vessel, which was also carrying wood pulp to England, was attacked off the west coast of Sweden. Hope Must be Abandoned The Ministry of Information announces that hope must be abandoned for the British steamer Royal * Sceptre, of 4853 tons, which was sunk by a U-boat on September 6, 300 miles west of Ushant, says a British official wireless message. The vessel sent an 5.0.5., indicating that she was being shelled, and that the crew had been ordered to leave the ship, as she was sinking. Signals were received on September 6 that Danish and Norwegian vessels had searched the locality, but had found no traces of the boats.
