WAR JUST BEGUN
ANGLO-FRENCH DECISION VALUE OF MEDITERRANEAN REAL CENTRE OF INTEREST (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept. 24 The Paris correspondent of the New York Times states that M. Daladier was able to report when in London a more satisfactory situation than last week. Although German propagandists are dwelling on the inability of France and Britain to give Poland effective aid it is pointed out here that neither promised to prevent an invasion nor immediately to throw their whole weight against Germany. They guaranteed that if the Poles were attacked they would take up the fight. They have done so, it is believed, in a manner most likely to lead to the ultimate salvation of the Polish cause. More and more it is insisted in Paris that the struggle has only begun. Those who are in a hurry had better revise their whole conception of how victory can be assured. The Mediterranean is still held to be the real centre of interest. Hitler’s aim from the outset of his career has been to give Germany an outlet to the Mediterranean. Hence Russia’s intervention is not deemed entirely disastrous. It is seen as tending to re-establish the balance in Eastern Europe and the Balkans since the Treaty of Versailles. MEETING IN ENGLAND CROWD CHEERS PREMIER (United Press Assn.— Elec. Tel. Copyriglit) LONDON, Sept. 22 The War Council meeting was held in a town where, though secrecy was observed, a large crowd gathered and cheered the two Premiers.
