Former Boxer Fined A former middle-weight boxer, Nelson Joseph McKnight, pleaded not guilty in the Police Court, Auckland, yesterday, to assaulting a taxi-driver, Bruce Crowley. Sub-Inspector Pender said accused, who was drunk, knocked complainant’s cap over his eyes while driving. Accused said complainant refused to drive to instructions. He said he sneezed in the driver’s face and apologised. A line of £2 was imposed.

First-Aid Among Fijians Among the sugar-cane and sugarmill workers of Lautoka, Fiji, there is a strong interest in first-aid, and by a recent mail the St. John Ambulance Association in Auckland received a request for several dozen volumes of books on that and kindred subjects for members of the local group. This is the second branch in Fiji. One was opened in Suva a few months ago under the patronage of the Governor, Sir Harry Luke, shortly after his visit to Auckland early this year.

Coloured Petrol For Treotore? A decision to approach the Government about shorter hours for service stations was reached at a meeting of the Invercargill Petrol Resellers’ Association. It was decided to cease the practice of granting credit and to sell petrol on a cash basis. It was also resolved to ask the Government to colour petrol for use in tractors, as it was stated that many persons were buying petrol for tractors, obtaining a rebate, and using the petrol in their cars. Waggon and Four Revived The unusual sight of a waggon drawn by four horses, and carrying several people and a load of groceries, was seen on the Dargaville-Whangarei road in the vicinity of Tangiteroria on a recent afternoon. A motorist said the horses had obviously been brought from the runs to which they had been driven by the advance of the motor car, and, after being hurriedly brushed down, had been put to the unaccustomed task of taking the farmer aiid his wife to town. Day of Intercession interviewed yesterday, Mr F. \V. Horner, of Hawera, president of the New Zealand Baptist Union, who is visiting the Waikato, said that the Baptists of New Zealand observed a day of prayer, intercession and humiliation in connection with the war a fortnight ago, but lie desired that they should follow the lead given by Archbishop AveriH and the Moderator of the Presbyterian Assembly to observe another day of intercession on Sunday, October 1. The general executive committee of the Churches of Christ has unanimously decided to accede to the suggestion of Archbishop Averill, and is requesting all churches to observe October 1 as a day of prayer and intercession. Unemployed and Farms The Whangarei branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union passed a resolution suggesting that unemployment benciris to able-bodied men under the Social Security Act should be suspended for the duration of the war; that scheme 4B for farm development work should he abolished and a revised scheme for general farm labour introduced with the view of increasing production, it was contended that if production were to be speeded up the labour problem would have to he solved, but while men Jiving in the towns were being catered for by unemployment benefits there was no hope of their taking country work unless they were frightened into it.
