They were shown round by the Mayor of Wellington, Mr Hislop, who is chairman f of directors of the exhibition, and by Mr C. P. Hainsworth, general manager. | Afterward Mr 'Hislop addressed the j visitors, explaining the circumstances that had prompted the directors to decide to carry on the exhibition in spite of the war. He said they were confident that they would still record satisfactory attendances, as their anticipations were based on very conservative figures. Importance of Vegetables The Governor-General, Lord Galway. • at the opening of the Hutt YaJley J Horticultural Society's spring show at i Lower Hutt this week, advocated the 1 growing of vegetables by private i households during Ihe war period. He I said that il was important to become as i self-supporting as possible, not only by I growing vegetables at the time of year they were easily raised, but all the > year round. There should be particular attention given to growing those varieties which could be stored for ' winter consumption. If care and trouble were taken, the dining-room table could be kept supplied from citizens' own gardens all the year round. In the months ahead they should cultivate vegetables so that the t maximum amount could be raised, specially in the valued Hutt area, with j its close proximity to the city of Wei- v ling ton.
