KNITTED BALACLAVA
The following instructions for knitting a balaclava supplied by Miss M. E. Robieson, acting secretary of the Wellington Nursing Division were used by the Nursing Division during the Great War. Take four ply fingering, three ply wheeling, 2 skeins or lib, making 5 caps. No. 7 needles are used. Cast on 90 stitches, knit 3 purl 3 plain for 5 inches, take off 2i stitches on to another needle, knit 38 plain rows (19 ribs) in the remaining 69 stitches. Knit 15, knit 2 together, plain to end of row. Repeat until 4 2 stitches are left on the needle, then knit 9, knit 2 together, knit plain to end of row. Repeat until 25 stitches are left. Now reduce by knitting 2 together 3 times in every row, until 3 stitches are left. Using four No. 10 sock pins pick up each side 114 stitches, including 21 on the other needle. Knit 3 purl 3 plain for 2 inches. Cast off tightly and sew up. N.B.—Owing to a typographical error a slight alteration has been made in the instructions which were printed on September 6-
