SOLDIERS’ INTERESTS
COMMITTEE IN OPOTIKI SCHEME TO ESTABLISH FUND (Special to Times) OPOTIKI, Thursday At a largely-attended meeting of men from the borough and county held last night it was decided to form the Opotoki War Vigilance Committee. Mr J. B. Cow. who presided, explained that the object of the association would be the care for the affairs of men who enlisted and left the district on war duties. Sub-committees were decided on to deal with the following matters: Soldiers’ legal and financial matters; care of business matters; oversight of farms, homes apd personal matters. It was also unanimously decided to investigate the institution of a fund to be invested in and controlled by local trustees, for the ultimate benefit of men and women enlisting from Opotiki town and country. Speakers referred to the fact lhat during the Great, War district funds were pooled with outside control, and they did not want'this to happen again, as there had been far too many formalities involved in getting assistance for Opotiki men. CONTROL OF FUNDS ROTORUA SCHEME INSTITUTED (Special to Times) ROTORUA, Thursday With the object of taking a lead regarding the provision of funds for patriotic and war purposes, and also to prevent the indiscriminate collection and allocation of such funds, the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce is instituting a scheme whereby business people and others are to he asked to agree to donate a minimum sum each month. The funds thus collected will be allocated by a special committee to such bodies as the Red Cross Society, the St. Johg Ambulance Association, the Y.M.C.A. and other officially recognised organisations. The committee appointed to handle the fund consists of Messrs W. R. Harris (president of the chamber), W. R. P. Moody (secretary), j. H. Higgins (treasurer), S. J. Hale, H. D. Dansey. R. H. Jones, F. Greenfield, H. Langguth and S. Walker. WAR BURBARIEB BROADER SCOPE OF AWARD (By Teloaranh.—Prc<« Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday The award of bursaries is broadened by the war bursaries regulations issued with to-night’s Gaette. They provide for the award of a war bursary to a pupil otherwise qualified who is attending a public post-primary or private post-primary school. Bursaries are now also available to a university student, who is paying his own university tuition fees. Previously a war bursary was tenable only at slate post-primary schools and was available only to university students who had a university bursary.
