AMONG THE BOYS
EX-EMPEROR SEL*CSIE ENJOYS LIFE IN A CAMP (Times Air Mail Service) LONDON, August 31 A printed notice hangs outside a tent in a field where 55 boys are camping on a hillcrest at Penllergaer, near Swansea: “ His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Abyssinia,” says the Daily Mail’s Swansea correspondent. Inside I saw a small camp table, a divan, and a few books. Outside a swarthy, bearded figure in a light grey summer suit was strolling with a racket under his arm. Haile Selassie, exiled Emperor of what is jiow called Italian Ethiopia, had just played a couple of strenuous sets of tennis with his nephew, Prince Astrate Kassa, and others of the boys of Derwen Fawr Bible College School who form this camp. He has thoroughly enjoyed himself since he came here a few.) days ago, and the boys have decided that he is a “ sport.” He plays tennis on the hard courts, and rounders anywhere. When they sit round the camp fire in the evening his deep voice joins in all their rollicking songs. The Day’s Menu If war is avoided the exiled Emperor intends to enjoy the peace of this camp for another eight or ten days. He eats the same food as the boys. His breakfast today, for instance, was cornflakes, a boiled egg, bread and butter, marmalade, and a fig. For luncheon lie had Welsh stew (cawl) and pineapples; for tea—tea. bread and butter, jam and cakes. To 55 boys at least the man the world regards as a tragic figure is really a very jolly fellow.
