FAT STOCK SALES DECLINE IN BEEF PRICES PORK AND LAMB FIRM AUCKLAND, Thursday At the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday a decline in prices was most marked in beef, which was quoted up to 4s per 1001 b. lower. Mutton showed an easing tendency, as did bacon. Pork, lamb and prime veal were firm. Steers sold to £2O 2s 6d compared with £2l reached before, and cows realised to £ls 10s, against £l4 17s 6d. Ewe mutton was most affected by dullness of competition in the sheep sale and at 29s the best offer was more than 4s less than that of last week. The top price for wethers was 39s 9d, compared with 49s 6d. Lambs in their usual numbers sold at late lambs making to 33s 3d. An outstanding steer runner made £l2 7s 6d, which was 15s better than before. Vealers were quoted to £8 16s, losing slightly. Baconer and porker pigs were lower in price. Of the average entry baconers were most affected, selling to £4 ss. against £4 9s, and averaging 6sd per lb. Porkers again reached £2 16s, with average quotations from 6id to 6Jd per lb.

Individual Consignments Top price for steers was £2O 2s 6d, made by a consignment from Stephen Brothers, Waiotira. Steers marketed on behalf of Mr G. Vosper, Cambridge, bought £lB 7s 6d, and a lot from Mr T. Smellie, Taneatua, to £lB. An offer of £l6 was received for a line from Mr C. A. Cameron, Kiwitahi, and one of £ls 17s 6d, for steers from Mr K. D. Orr, Tuakau. A bid of £ls 10s was received for a consignment of cows and heifers from Mr W. L. Orr, Papatoetoe. Pens sold on account of Mr H. E. Reed, Waerenga, and Otupae, Limited, Putaruru, realised to £l3 10s. Other quotable lines were traded on behalf of Mr H. Windsor, Matangi. Dalgety and Co., Ltd.

We again had a full yarding, principally ewes. Well-finished wethers sold freely but did not reach last ■week's level. Values for ewes showed a bigger decline than wethers. Extra heavy prime wethers realised £1 19s to £1 19s 9d; heavy, £1 15s 6d to £1 18s 6d; medium, £1 12s 6d to £1 15s; lighter, £1 5s to £1 9s; light and unfinished, 19s to £1 2s 6d; heavy prime ewes, £1 5s 3d to £1 8s 9d; lighter, £1 2s to £1 ss; others, 12s 6d to £1 Is.

An average entry sold under good competition at values barely equal to last week. Heavy prime sold at 25s to 27s 3d; medium, 22s 6d to 24s 6d; lighter, 20s to 225; small and plain, 12s 6d to 17s. Large numbers came forward, the majority plain and unfinished. For any prime quality values were firm on last week's quotations, while unfinished calves were easier of sale. Runners brought £7 to £lO 16s; heavy vealers, £6 15s to £7 17s; medium, £5 15s to £6 10s; light, £4 5s to £5 8s; small, £3 3s to £4; smaller, £2 to £2 18s; plain and unfinished, £1 5s to £2 2s; bobby calves, 6s to 17s. An average yarding met with a steady sale with values firm on last week’s quotations. Heavy baconers made £3 18s to £4 2s; medium, £3 12s to £3 16s; light, £3 3s to £3 8s; heavy porkers, £2 12s to £2 16s; medium, £2 5s to £2 10s; light, £1 16s to £2 2s; small, £1 10s to £1 14s; stores, £1 8s to £1 14s; slips, £1 2s to £1 ss; weaners, 11s to £l. Alfred Buckland and Sons Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, reports:— At our weekly Westfield fat stock market we penned 270 head of fat cattle, against 259 head last week, comprising 116 steers and 154 cows and heifers. We again had a heavy yarding of ox beef. Competition at the start of the sale was steady, but values later eased considerably. Cows and heifers also eased slightly. Extra choice ox sold to 42s per 1001 b; choice and prime ox, 39s to 41s; secondary and plain, '36s to 38s; prime young cow and heifer beef, 38s to 40s; ordinary cow beef, 31s to 345. Extra

We had an increased offering, including many pens of prime quality runners. There was a steady demand throughout, and values for all prime quality runners and vealers were firm, while plain and unfinished calves were slightly easier. Heavy prime runners, £9 10s to £l2 7s 6d, the latter price for an outstanding heavy prime steer sold on account of Stephen Brothers, Waiotira; medium, £7 to £9 ss; light and unfinished, £4 10s to £5 15s; heavy prime vealers, £7 10s to £8 12s; medium, £6 to £7 2s; light, £4 12s to £5 12s; smaller, £3 10s to £4 8s; small, 18s to £3 3s; rough calves, £1 to £1 18s; bobby calves, 5s to 16s. A total of 334 calves was sold.

There was an average entry. Bidding for baconers was not keen and prices eased. Prime porkers sold steadily at late quotations with values for unfinished and small sorts lower. Last week’s top price of £2l was not reached, our highest price for an ox being £TB 2s 6d. Sheep.—An average yarding sold to steady competition, with values again easier, fat ewes being affected most. Extra heavy prime wethers, £1 17s to £1 17s 6d; heavy, £1 15s to £1 16s 9d; medium, £1 12s to £1 14s 9d; light, £1 8s to £1 11s 9d; smaller, £1 5s to £1 7s 9d; small and unfinished, £1 2s to £1 is 9d; extra heavy ewes, £1 7s to £1 9s; heavy, £1 4s to £1 6s 9d; medium, £1 Is 6d to £1 3s 9d; light, 17s to £1 Is; jus-t killable, 10s to 16s 6d; inferiorly fatted, 5s to 9s.

Lambs.—Average numbers sold at late quotations. Extra heavy prime, £1 6s to £1 9s; heavy, £1 4s to £1 5s 9d; medium, £1 2s to £1 3s 9d; light, £1 to £1 Is 9d; smaller, 18s to 19s 9d; unfinished, best, 13s to 17s 6d; others, 8s to 12s 6d; spring lambs, 29s 9d to 33s 3d.

Pigs.—We had an average yarding. Values were firm at late quotations. Choppers sold from £1 to £3 7s 6d; heavy and medium baconers, £3 10s ■to £4; light baconers and heavy porkers, £2 16s to £3 8s; medium porkers and light porkers, £2 4s to £2 14s; small, £1 15s to £2 2s; unfinished, £1 10s to £1 13s. Keener competition prevailed for store pigs. Values were firmer. Large stores, £1 10s to £1 18s; slips, £1 to £1 8s; weaners, 10s to £1 4s.

Calves.—Larger numbers were penned. Good quality calves sold at firm values, but plainer calves -were easier. Runners, £5 10s to £9 17s 6d; heavy vealers, £7 10s to £8 16s; medium, £5 15s to £7 ss; light, £4 to £5 10s; smaller, £3 6s to £3 16s; small, £2 to £3 3s; rough, £1 to £1 10s; fresh dropped to three-weeks-old, 7s to £1 16s.
