ST. PETER’S CLUB SUCCESSFUL YEAR ELECTION OF OFFICERS A successful year was reviewed at the annual meeting of the St. Peter's tennis club, held before a good attendance of members. The president, Mr H. McFarlane, presided. The annual report disclosed that the membership had been as large as previous years and with the improved courts the standard of play has been raised considerably. The club had expended a large amount of money ou the courts during the last year and now they are comparable with any in the district. The club had entered two - teams in the Hamilton sub-association competitions, one in the A grade and the other in the B grade. The B team won their grade and were undefeated at the end of the season. Entries were quite large in the club competitions, and many keen games resulted. The Vickery Cup was won by Mrs J. Pollard and the Page Cup by Mr L. H. Annett. The balance sheet disclosed that the club was in a satisfactory position. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington. Bisho-p of Waikato; president, Mr C. F. Davey; vice-presidents, Messrs J. F. McCullough, H. H. Short, and G. C. Hunter; club captain, Mr L. H. Annett; secretary, Miss J. Lock; assistant secretary. Mrs V. Browne; treasurer, Mr I. Andrews, auditor, Mr A. B. Whyte; committee members, Misses (J. Hilder, R. Matthews. Messrs 1L Cliffe, A. J. Yendell; delegates to the Hamilton Sub-association, Messrs I. Johnston and H. McFarlane.. As a mark of appreciation for his services to the club over a number of years, the retiring president, Mr 11. McFarlane, was elected a life member. Owing to the increasing costs, it was unanimously decided that If the club was to continue Issuing balls to members, then the subscriptions would have to be raised 5s all round. The opening day of the new season was fixed for Saturday, September 30, 1939. TENNIS SEASON CAMBRIDGE TRINITY CLUB (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Tuesday. At the annual meeting of Trinity Presbyterian Tennis Club tne Rev. H. W. lutebeock presided over a good attendance of members. The work carried out last season in permanently surfacing the club’s courts at a cost of £93 was the main feature of the report. A special fund for the purpose had been well supported and was assisted by the generosity of Mr C. Atkinson. The financial statement showed a credit of £35. The election of officers resulted:—President, the Rev. H. W. Hitchcock; vicepresidents, leaders of tbe Bible classes and Messrs A. N. Macky, R. Hay Smith and Yv. A. Fisher; club captain, Mr S. ulanville; secretary, Mr L. W. Gibbs; general committee, Mrs R. Hughes, Miss I. Slater, Messrs I. Bryce and C. Atkinson; match committee, Mrs R. Hughes, Messrs S. Ulanville and 1. Bryce; refreshment committee, Mrs Hitchcock, Misses E. Sutcliire, C. Moore, E. Burns, delegates to subassociation, Messrs iS. Glanvliie and 1. Bryce. it was decided to bold the official opening in three weeks. GOLF CHAMPION GIFT OF 300 DOLLARS COMPENSATION FOR MISTAKE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept. IS The national open golf champion, Byron Nelson, received 300 dollars in an anoTlymous leltcr explaining “4 lady in our party unwittingly picked up your golf ball during Hie Hershey open tournament a fortnight ago. She was unfamiliar with the game. As the lady was my guest, 1 feel responsible.” If Nelson had not lost the ball he would have won 750 dollars as second prize money, instead of 450 dollars for fourth place. LOCHIEL CLUB OXF.-DAY TOURNAMENT During the week-end the members of the Lochiel Golf Club held a oneday tournament over 36 holes. Some good scores were returned and several players earned r# luctions in handicaps. Results were as follows:—Best gross score, J. Ilaggo 80, 82, 102; best net score, T. Lorimer 178, 43, 135; Stableford bogey handicap, D. McGowan 40; bogey handicap, N. Ross 2 up; teams match, best net over 36 holes, D. Steer, T. Lorimer, J. Cramp and 11. J. Hall, 577. Next week-end a start will be made with the club championships, and the qualifying round will be played next Saturday afternoon. No draw will be made, but players may book in a starting time.
