PATRIOTIC FUNDS

REGULATIONS EXPECTED REQUEST TO LOCAL BODIES DEFER PRESENT CAMPAIGNS (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The Government expects to be able to publish early next week emergency regulations dealing with patriotic funds to be established during the war. Concern was expressed to-day by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, that despite the fact that the Government had outlined the position with regard to the raising of war funds, a number of bodies in New Zealand was launching campaigns for the collection of donations for war purposes. The Government felt, added the Minister, that it was essential that bodies already in the field soliciting donations should call a halt. He earnestly asked that all arrangements already made or proposed be deferred until the regulations had been issued. DRASTIC REDUCTION CENTENNIAL PROGRAMME DECISION IN AUCKLAND (By Teiegrnnh.—Pros* Associarlon) AUCKLAND, Wednesday The utilisation for patriotic purposes of the machinery of the Auckland Provincial Centennial Council is likely to follow a drastic reduction in the programme of celebrations for the metropolitan area, which on the recommendation of the executive was unanimously confirmed at a meeting of members of all sub-committees last night. The metropolitan programme, estimated to cost £35,000, has been radically curtailed. Willingness to undertake the collection, administration and disbursement of patriotic funds was expressed by the metropolitan executive, and subject to Government approval the personnel of the metropolitan organisation will be adapted to patriotic endeavour. The balance remaining from the Centennial fund after carrying out the curtailed programme will form the nucleus of the metropolitan donation to the patriotic fund. The proceedings were adjourned for a month.
