Sept. 17 Tlie United States steamer American Farmer, which reported by radio that she rescued 29 members of the crew of the British steamer Kaflristan, which was torpedoed in the Atlantic, added that an aeroplane attacked the submarine after the torpedoing of the Kaflrlstan. The submarine replied with a machine-gun and then disappeared, leaving heavy white smoke on the surface.
