COMPULSORY SERVICE

LABOUR ATTITUDE IN SOUTH (Special to Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday A motion opposing the introduction of conscription for military service was carried at the last meeting of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee. A division in the ranks of political labour organisations on this question was indicated by the closeness of the voting. Although the meeting was largely attended the motion was carried by a majority of only six votes. A review of their attitude of the conscription issue was not possible by many of the branches by the time the meeting of the Labour Representation Committee was held, and another fulldress debate is promised for the next meeting on Thursday night. The subject has been reopened by notice of motion J that the resolution opposing conscription be rescinded.
