MORE TAXATION

FINANCING OF WAR LEGISLATION THIS WEEK PURCHASE OF FARM PRODUCE (Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Sunday Although some controversial legislation is likely to be introduced in the House of Representatives during the next few days, the Government is shaping its plans with a view to finishing the session of Parliament this week. The taxation proposals for financing New Zealand's effort in the war are awaited with interest. No indication has yet been given as to the exact form these will take, but taxpayers are reconciled to the fact that the additional imposts announced in the Budget will be further increased by a substantial amount. As announced by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, the Government intends as far as possible to finance the war out of revenue. Dairy Produoe The arrangements made between the New Zealand Government and the authorities in Great Britain for the purchase of this country’s output of primary produce are of particular interest to the rural community, and the full details of these are also awaited. Dairy farmers’ representatives have already met the Minister of Marketing in respect to the purchase of dairy produce. Most people are interested to see how the price paid for our butter and cheese by the British Government compares with the guaranteed price paid by the New Zealand Government. Business Expedited As a result of co-operation between the Government and the Opposition, Parliamentary business was expedited during the past week. Indeed, there is little if any consequence left on the Order Paper, most of the Bills requiring consideration having been passed. The Supplementary Estimates and the Public Works Estimates have also been approved, and to all intents and purposes the w ? ay is clear for consideration of the major legislation arising out of the outbreak of war.
