RED CROSS WORK

CANTERBURY PREPARES “I cannot tell you at present exactly what to do to help in this disaster which has overtaken the world. 1 cannot say, ‘Do this. Do that.’ For the moment I appeal to you most earnestly to go on with your first aid and home nursing training; do not waste anything—there may he a shortage later—put your own homes in order and cultivate your gardens, so that if you are needed you will be able to give your time and energy to Red Cross work. Conserve your resources and keep up your courage.” These words were addressed by Lady Wigram, chairwoman of the women’s executive of the Red Cross Society, to a large and enthusiastic meeting of women held at the Red Cross rooms, Christchurch, recently, states the Press. Conserving Material Lady Wigram said that money was urgently needed, and she asked the sub-centres, wherever possible, to raise funds either by direct or indirect giving. She emphasised the need for conserving supplies of materials, such as calico, flannelette, butter-muslin, and old linen, which might be needed later. In reply to one delegate, who said that in her district and in other small communities there was no organised body of women such as the Women's Institute or the Women's Division, but all were anxious to help in the present emergency, Lady Wigram said that all such small groups would be warmly welcomed to the Red Cross Society, and she asked the representative to convey to them her invitation to form a sub-centre, no matter how small the membership might be. Their help would be greatly appreciated. Each sub-centre was asked to keep a list of members with their addresses and the nature of the work they would be prepared to do in an emergency.
