OARRIERB GO-OPERATING FARMERS SHARE CARTAGE townspeople: asked to assist To meet the new conditions brought about by the present state of national emergency, the Hamilton Carriers’ Association is taking ail possible steps to conserve benzine supplies by the elimination of as much unnecessary mileage as possible, consistent with maintaining an efficient service to the public. A central office is being established for the co-ordination of cartages, and users are asked to give all possible assistance. In many country districts the farmers are already showing a willingness to help in such ways as the placing of cream cans in the most convenient places. For instance, neighbours’ cans are placed on one stand so that one stop need be made instead of two or more. In other cases the cans are being taken by the farmer right to the main road instead of the carrier having to go along a side road and hack. Another form of assistance is being given by neighbour farmers combining small lots of livestock to make a full load to the market. The bobby calf pool onimittees have arranged, wherever pots Ole, to make one collection weekly instead of two. Early Orders Requested In such ways as these one |r)ig of four country carriers is already saving mileaije amounting to 700 milts a month. In and near the towns it Is suggested that the users, both pjbiio and tradespeople, could greatly assist by telephoning their orders a 7 early as possible, thus giving carrier* an opportunity to arrange deliveries u the best advantage. This also applies to coal and produce deliveries, In fact to everything except the mose perishable articles. Other avenues to economise mileage are being explored and wilt be made public from time to time. It is hoped that with the willing cooperation of the users, the saving in benzine will help to offset the recent increases in operating costs and keep cartage prices down to a minimum. The Commissioner of Transport is expected in Hamilton next Monday to meet representatives of licensing authorities and all transport operators in South Auckland.
