NOTED EXPLORER

PROFESSOR ARNOLD HEIM BN ROUTE TO PATAGONIA (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Saturday. Recognised as one of the foremost geologists and *Ol6llllllO explorers of the world, Professor Arnold Ilcini, formerly professor of geology at Zurich University, Switzerland, and Canton University, China arrived at Auckland yesterday. He has written 200 scientific pamphlets and travel books, and the latest of these, “Throne of the Gods,” was translated into English and published several months ago. This book tells the story of the first Swiss Himalayan expedition of 1936. Its purpose was geological research, and Professor Heim stated that the most outstanding discovery was that the whole of Himalayan Tibet was pushed 100 miles to the south against the Indian plain, which was sinking. As a counter-balance the Himalayas were rising at a rate geologically rapid. The professor has explored in every country in the world except South America and he is now on his way to Patagonia, where he proposes to cross the southern Andes and the inland ice sheet. This has not previously been explored, and it is proposed to make a geological survey. In 1929-31 Professor Heim went through china and Chinese Tibet and in 1933-34 crossed the Sahara Desert at a point not previously traversed. In recent months he has visited the interior of Dutch New Guinea and Papua, where he saw the pigmies., a people whose height varies from 4ft. sin. to 4ft. lOin.
