Prayers For Guidance
OBSERVANCE IN BRITAIN SPECTAL DAY BET ABIDE APPEAL TO THE DOMINIONS (Official Wireless) (Received Sept. 16, 2 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 15. “With the approval of the King and by order of His Majesty’s Privy Council, Sunday, October 1, has been appointed a day of national prayer,” says an announcement issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury. “By this order I am directed to prepare a form of intercession to be used in all churches and chapels in the provinces of Canterbury and York on that day, as well as on such other occasions as each Bishop may appoiut for his own diocese. “As the day of national prayer is to be a Sunday the form naturally has been adapted to the regular services of the church —Holy Communion and morning and evening prayers, containing special Psalms, lessons and prayers. It will be noted that there is a direction between bidding the minister and each of these special prayers that there shall be a pause for silent prayer. I hope this silence will not be merely a momentary pause but that it will be long enough to give the members of the congregation time for recollection and making their own personal prayers. Need of Divine Help “The purpose of the prayer which follows is to gather up in one the prayers which will thus have been severally offered. “The order applies directly only to the Church of England, as by law established. But it is a means by which the State expresses recognition of God and the need of divine help and guidance. The order therefore will rightly be regarded as national in its scope and intention. “I am convinced that the authorities of other Christian communions in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will be ready to commend the observance of this Sunday, October 1, by their ministers and congregations so that 'the whole of the people of the United Kingdom as they enter upon the terrible ordeal of war may be able to join together as one community in the common national life and cause to Almighty God, and thus the day may be truly a day of national prayer. “I venture also to hope that if this announcement reaches any Dominion or colony in time the authorities of the various churches there may enable their people to join with their brethren in the United Kingdom in this act of united prayer to God.” BRITISH MILK SUPPLY AMPLE FOR ALL NEEDS GERMAN STATEMENT REFUTED (Official Wireless) (Received Sept. 16, 12.45 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 15 Germany in a receni broadcast announcement tried to delude the world in believing that London is without milk. The reply by the Milk Marketing Board is to be found in the advertisement columns of today’s newspapers, which urged housewives to see that every member of their families has at least a pint of milk each day.” Adequate supplies are available, and will be” runs the announcement. A pint per head daily, is twice the quantify of milk hitherto consumed in Britain even in peace time. SPORTS TO PROCEED FOOTBALL MATCHES PERMITTED (Official Wireless) (Received Sept. 16, 2.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 15 The Home Office's decision allowing the reopening of cinemas and theatres also applies to lootball and organised games, enabling the football association to proceed with its competitive matches. There will be no professional club matches tomorrow, owing to the lack ol time for assembling the players, but the majority of leading league clubs are playing pre-arranged friendly games in safe areas.
