“WICKED BLOCKADE” CRITICISM OF BRITAIN MEASURES DEFENDED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 14 The German press is working full blast to convince the German people of the wickedness of the British blockade and the justice of the German defence measures, says the Rotterdam correspondent of the Times. It is stated that Britain aims to starve women and children and dictate to neutrals what to buy. The German contraband list is divided into two sections. The first is described as “ unconditional ” and covers all sorts oi' war materials. The second, “ conditional,” Includes foodstuffs, luxuries, textiles and raw materials. A Berlin message says submarines have been instructed to begin an Immediate counterblockade. The Minister of Economic Warfare, Mr R. IT. Cross, gave an assurance in the House of Commons that vigorous measures are already in operation to prevent such commodities as tin, rubber and cotton reaching enemy lands either by land or sea. The former Heimwehr (Austrian Fascist Party) leader, Prince Von Slarbemberg, has asked permission lo raise an Austrian brigade to fight for France.
COST OF THE WAR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS NEUTRALS’ DIFFICULTIES (United Press Assn.— Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 16, 11 a.tn.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 The European war will cost the neutral and United States taxpayers 112,000,000 dollars in the current fiscal year. The Budget Bureau is framing its estimates accordingly, owing to the outlay on expansion of the peace-time forces.
