AVOIDING LOSS

FARMS AND BUSINESSES MEN ON MILITARY SERVICE SCHEME AT TE AWAMUTU (Special to Times.) TE AWAMUTU, Thursday. The question of establishment of a committee for the purpose of voluntarily supervising farms and businesses of men oil active service was raised at Te Awamutu last week by the Agricultural and Pastoral Association which took steps to bring the matter before other bodies. The Chamber of Commerce went very fully into the scheme at its meeting this week. The president, Mr R. G. Connal, said that a committee for this purpose had been formed at Waipukurau and he commended the idea. Mr J. G. Wynyard said that men called for service could, by means of a scheme as suggested, expect able and qualified assistance and thus avoid loss. lie had been informed that such a service operated in England during the last war. Capable Administration Mr L. G. Armstrong stressed the fact that a man who had a real sense of his responsibilities would probably hesitate to volunteer unless he could feel assured that his affairs would be capably administered during his absence. He thought that great care should be exercised in selecting the personnel of any committee so that by an adequate blending the men would have confidence from the outset. Support was given by Messrs Melrose and Oliphant, and, in answer to a question, the president said thjit if the men chose to do so, they could hand their affairs over to an attorney but possibly they might prefer to have the assistance of a capable committee which would act in an honorary capacity. It was decided to affirm the principle and give the chamber’s full support and recommend that the committee consist of two members each from the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the Farmers’ Union and the Chamber of Commerce with power to appoint unattached advisers. Mr Wynyard stated that the sponsor of the movement, the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, would appreciate an immediate appointment of the chamber’s representatives so that the formation of the committee could be expedited. Messrs L. G. Armstrong and J. G. Wynyard were appointed.
