HOTEL FOR MATAMATA

OBJECTIONS TO LICENCE PETITION TO PARLIAMENT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday A petition objecting to the granting of a publican’s license to Matamata was presented in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr F. W. Doidge opposition —Tauranga) on behalf of G. E. Simpson and 512 others. Petitioners said they believed that steps had been taken to seek a new licence" or the transfer of a licence, for Matamala. They objected to this course on the ground that a licensed house was not required in the neighbourhood. Petitioners also explained that there was a very large motor traffic to and from the Okauia Hot Springs, and the institution of a publican’s license would inevitably result in increased danger and loss of life. It would also be a source of danger to the youth of the district, which by reason of the no-licence conditions has been particularly free from crime and destitution. There were licensed hotels at Okoroire, Tirau, Te Aroha, and Morrinsville. The pettioners had the interests of the Maoris at heart, and there were Maori settlements at Waharoa, Okauia, Te Poi and Hinuera.
