RACING AT AVONDALE
FINE FIELDS ENGAGED THIRTEEN IN CUP EVENT TE RAPA CONTINGENT ENTERED THE PROSPECTS REVIEWED (By “Martian”) Large and well-balanced fields are carded for the opening day to-mor-row) of the Avondale Jockey dub's spring meeting and with fine weather the club should experience a most successful day s racing. The principal event, the Avondale Cup, has drawn thirteen runners, while in the open sprint no less than 29 have paid up and unless at least one is scratched a division will be neoessary. The large field in the Trial Plate will probably render a division in this event inevitable. Following are the fields with a review of the prospe-cts: — 11.46
Royail Dance showed dashing form over obstacles on occasions last term, one of his finest performances being his achievement in winning the Hamilton Hurdles at Te Rapa in May. Agog should be all the better for racing at Fliccarton, where his form was not impressive, and a better prospect may be the improving Mia Acrea, who has been shaping well on the tracks at Takanini in recent weeks. Cadger’s showing at Ellerslie last month draws attention to his credendials. King Musk has been off the scene for a spell and will have to be taken on trust. Tutor should account for Adsum. !He has been a consistent placegetter of late and is reported to be in good order for engagements ahead. Kittle will need to improve and of the others the be6t may be Tane Mahulu. There should be good support forthcoming for— MIA ACREA TUTOR GADOUR 12.30 TRIAL PLATE Sweepstakes of £2 each, with £2OO added; colts and geldings 8.2, mares 7.11; 7 furs. First Division
Dick Turpin should be all the better for racing at Ellerslie last month. Pern has been galloping in encouraging styi© and Master Vaals has also been shaping well on the tracks at Kllepslie. Te Kawiti is bearing a healthy appearance, but. may not be sufficiently forward as yet lo show to best advantage. Water Fox is a likely improver with a chance, while lieverley may be seen to better advantage than was the case a the first ‘division of the Jervois HmdicaD at Ellerslie last month. Royal Fawkes was placed on several occasions last year. Starbright has been galloping freely at Te Rapa and other likely sorts comprise Gladynev, Mayfair, First Gold Money and Miss Valerie. The public may sum up for— ROYAL FAWKES GLADYNEV STARBRIGHT Second Division st. lb. st. lb. Glen Connell 8 2 Teilsom ... 82 British Talent 8 2 Proud Fox . 8 2 Hunto ... 82 Stinola 82 Lapldarian . . 8 2 Surmise ... 8 2 Crestman ..82 Lady Bambury 7 11 Tbe Dozer 8 2 R. Huntress 7 11 Silver Glow . 8 2 Every Port . 7 11 Rey Lu . . 8 2 Gay Movie . 7 11 Meadow ... 8 2 Miss Briefly .711 Brackets: Imperator and lapldarian. Master Vaals and Surmise. Pern and Meadow. Royal Fawkes and Proud Fox, Starbright and Silver Glow. Te Kawltl and Sunola. Water Fox and Teilsom. .Mayrair and Lady Bambury. First Gold Money and Every Fort. Marheke and Gay Movie, Miss Valerie and Miss Brlerley, Waitarma and Royal Huntress. Nothing has been galloping more attractively at Auckland than Glen Connell and he should take a power of beating in the second division. British Talent, too, has been shaping well in recent trials but Hunto, whose form at the Pakuranga Hunt drew attention to his future prospects, should hold him safe. Hunto is at home under easing conditions too, and if such obtain to-morrow he will appeal as Glen Connell's strongest opponent. Lapidarian and Crestman are likely improvers and further down are other likely sorts in The Dozer, Hey Lu, Sunlona, Surmise, Lady Bambury and Gay Movie. In a good race preference may be shown for— GLEN CONNELL HUNTO THE DOZEIR 1 1R
summary .77 A splendid response has been rer£i\>i for ?he hack sprint event and !herr is ample material for a splendid netting race. Mint law has been training on attractively and Sebrof's good second in a division of the ,lervois Handicap last month at the Pakuranga Hunt indicates that he will prove a force to be reckoned with. The Trimmer is a likely improver and Foxmond and Br.onzc Moth will need only to be at Lheir best to make their Night have useful credentials and the latter's running in the second division of the Jervois Handicap was indicative of «&rly improvement. Greek Queen
j has been off the scene for a spell but. I she showed definite promise early last I season and. at her best, would have tc be respected. Paxeno had winning } form to his credit in May und of the ' others the most likely would appear |to be Wyndora, Royal Message and Milanion. The public may sum up for— SEBROF FOXMOND MINT-LAW 2.0
The chief event has drawn a smart field and indications are for a stirring duel. King Rey holds pride of place with 9.0 and a line through his running at Riccarton where he ran a fine second to Charade with 11.13 in the Jumpers’ Fiat points to his making a forward showing. Ned Cuttle's recent form, too, is attractive and, especially in the event of the going beinp on t.be holding side, he should make a bold bid. Lowenberg will lack little on the score of condition and he appeals more than Master Brierly. Tidewaiter won this event last year, finishing with a spectaeualr burst in the straight to snatch victory right on the post. A repetition of that form would make him difficult to dispose of again. And his recent form points to his stripping in great fettle tomorrow. Jack Tar has been working well and the consistent Kena is entit/led to every consideration. Black Musk is a likely improver, as also is Jayola. who has previously won on the Avondale course. None of the lightweight division, however, make greater appeal than The Cardinal, whose fine performance at Ellerslie last month points to his taking a hand in the decision. A well-supported division may include— TIDEWAITER THE CARDINAL LOW'ENBER'G 2.46 AVONDALE STAKES Of £350; two-year-olds; colts and geldings 8.0, fillies 7.9; 4 furs.
Beau Leon shaped meritoriously in t the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui i the other week and, improved with i that race, may be seen to better advantage on this occasion. Kentucky showed evidence of speed in the two-year-old parade at the Pakuranga Hunt and has since been shaping well in his tasks, while Surpai, a Te Rapa entrant, has shown on the tracks that he may develop into a useful proposition in due course. Miss HaJlowmet shaped well in her initial public outing at Wanganui and should be susceptible to improvement and other likely types include Payette, Merryrneer, Golden Bonnet and . Belle Femme. Withal the race bears a very open aspect and the fact that this will be the first juvenile contest in the province there is much comparatively unknown talent engaged. However, at this stage indications are some who - may be well supported are— BEAU LEONMISS IIALrLOWM'ET KENTUCKY 3.30
The winning form of Veritable at Ellerslie last month points to Jiis going a solid race and it will be in his favour that he will strip in forward condition. Val Lu was finishing on in that race won by Veritable and as [ he lias been working well lie may make . amends. llagen was a w-iuner at Wa- [ nganui recently and will have a strong J following, while Erlick, Orelio and , Silver Stick are a likely trio with good i credentials. Clipper is a likely improver and Classic, on the score of condition, has much to commend his claims. Our Jean’s winning form in the first division of the Jervois Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt was impressive and she should prove one of the hardest to dispose of. Classaform, Bonnyhelle and Buccaneer are prospects in a race in which the elect may be — HAGEN OUR JEAN CLASSIC 4.16 FLYING HANDICAP Of £300; 6 furs.
Unless the field is reduced by one the race will have to he run in divisions. but for purposes of this review it is assumed that such an eventuality will not arise. Majority's impressive form at Trent ham will ensure him a strong following and he has arrived in good order for racing at the fixture. Francis Drake has been Shaping in dashing style nn the tracks and will have to be considered, while Orate corn's within the sAme category. And his New Plymouth form was encouraging. Royal Bachelor and Royal Vaals have prospects, and the running of Royevrus at Tc Awamutu will claim him a following. Kathbella is on the improve and the latest track essays of Valimeen indicate an early winning bracket. .Another who has been working well is the Te Rapa mudlark Prince Acre and
he should lack little on the score of condition. Aero King. Gay Seton. Marie's Acre, Birthday Boy and Bachelor King all possess the necessary credentials for consideration, but Bronwen. who commenced the season with an attractive success in the Admiralty Handicap at Ellerslie last month, makes greater appeal and at the weights looks to have an undeniable. chance. Of the others the best may be La Vic. The draw may have a bearing on the result, but a well-supported trio may be — PRINCE ACRE BRONWEN TE MON GW AI 6.0 BWANBON HANDICAP Of £250; l mile st. lb. st. lb. ~usan . . 9 0 Racellne . . 8 0 saccone ... 8 i Right Royal .711 beeswing ..87 Games ... 713 Spinning' Prtval . . 7 11 Wheel ..87 Vaalstar ..78 Erlick ... Saccone runs on well and should handle the long Avondale straight. Spinning Wheel and Royal Abb have prospects, but Valdene reads the better prospect. Improved by racing at the Pakuranga Hunt he has been working attractively and should strip fit and well for the part. Raceline looks well and is partial lo a soft track, while the recent progress of Garnos suggests a forward showing. Right Royal is an Improving horse and his second to The Cardinal at Ellerslie recently will ensure him a host of friends. Prival and Vaalstar should hold the balance safe in a race in which good support may be forthcoming for— VALD'ENE RIGHT ROYAL SUSAN RIDERS FOR TO-MORROW The following riding engagements are announced for the first day of the Avondale meeting: — A.
