Flock To Colours
NEARLY 1000 VOLUNTEERS HAMILTON DISTRICT RESPONBE MEDICAL EXAMINATION PLANS START TO BE ft.ADE ON MONDAY Men continue to flock to the colours to answer the nation’s call for recruits, and the register of volunteers in the Hamilton military area la rapidly approaching 1000 names. Up to 10 a.m. to-day the number of recruits In the district of No. 4 military area, extending from Mercer in the north to Owhanga in the south, totals 870. The majority of the enlistments have come from Hamilton, although the response in some of the outlying towns has been splendid. Uf the 87y enlistments, 64 are officers, and 727 single men of other ranks. Numbers of married men have enlisted. Plans for the medical examination of the volunteers in the No. 4 army area were advanced in Hamilton today. The dental and medical tests will begin next Monday at the Drill Hall, Knox Street, Hamilton. It is expected that about 200 men will go before the medical boards on the first day. The men chosen for examination on the first day will assemble at the Drill Hall at specified intervals, commencing from 8.30 a.m., and the task wiii proceed throughout the day. Notification Through Post The men to be examined on Monday will receive a notification through the poet of the date end time they are to attend at the Drill Hall. They will be assembled In batches of 30. Any recruit who finds It impossible to attend et the Drill Hall for examination at the time specified In the notification papers should notify the moblllation branch of the army department, Immediately, the telephone number in Hamilton being 4079. Volunteers are to be certain to take their notification papers with them when they attend for medical examination. Men who have volunteered but who do not receive notification through the post of a ©all for medical and dental examination will know that they are not required until a later date. Doctors Will be Busy Nearly ay the Hamilton doctors will operate on the medical boards on Monday. Tuesday is at present being held free so that medical men may attend to their private practices and the examination of the troops will continue in Hamilton on Wednesday. Plans arc being made for examinations at Te Kuiti also. Medtaal practitioners notify patients that they will be engaged on army business ell Monday and Wednesday. Mobilisation Date At least four medical boards will be operating in Hamilton, each working a certain shift so that the examination of recruits may proceed throughout the day. * All officers, selected non-commis-sioned officers and men will receive at least one week's notice as to whether they have been accepted for the force prior to being called up to go into camp. Officers and non-com-missioned officers and an advance party of up to 5 per cent, of the strength of_ the units to be mobilised will go into camp on September 23 and the remainder on October 3. WAR ITEMS A Ministry of Information communique states that two strikes occurred at the Opel Motor Works at Russelheim. A number of strikers was arrested. * * • * It is officially stated that a series of arrests has been made in Bohemia and Moravia. Reports state that they were the result of sabotage. * * m m The German Consulate at Riga is seeking to persuade German Jews in Latvia to return to the Reich. The British Broadcasting Corporation announces that daily news bulletins in Rumania and Serbo-Croat will be inaugurated to-morrow. The Lord Privy Seal stated in the House of Commons that no steps are being taken in Britain to interfere with the transmission of any foreign broadcast. • • • • It is announced that all racing fixtures in England for the year have been cancelled. Sterling is at the low rate of 3.76, says a message from New York. A German firm has ordered and paid for the phosphate cargo of the seized vessel Warrior, says a message from New York. An Australia, Mr Donald Thomson, has resigned from the Rockfeller Fellowship and is returning to Australia for war service. • • • • The British Ministry of Information states that Portugal has decided to remain neural.
