WAR SERVICE
POSITIONS KEPT OPEN HOSPITAL BOARD DECISION HOW WOMEN CAN ASSIST Positions on the staff of the Waikato Hospital Board held by either male or female employees who are called up for active service in the war will be retained for them until their return from service. This decision was made at the meeting of tihe board to-day. “ It is an understood thing, I should think,” said Mr W. B. Bluck, in moving that positions be kept open. “ The hoard cannot do anything else,” said Mr J. Banks. “ Any positions that are vacated by employees called up for active service should be filled temporarily only.” A Government communication to the board stated that an official announcement would shortly be made relating to leave of local body employees for active service, but in the meantime the board was advised to pay the contributions to the National Provident Superannuation Fund, when employees left for active service. Garments for Troops The chairman, Mr F. Findlay, said many inquiries had been received fitun women in Hamilton desiring to know how they could assist during the war. He suggested that women’s organisations should be informed that until such time as New Zealand soldiers were sent to the battle fronts, Balaclavas, mittens and sox should be sent to the British soldiers in France. With the winter approaching in Europe those garments would be needed, and would be very welcome to the “ Tommies.”
