Smeller Beer Glasses Sydney hotelkeepers have decided to reduce the size of glasses rather than pass on the recent increase in the excise and customs duties on beer. Loan Proposal Rejected A proposal to raise a loan of £2600 for a town hall and Muncipal block in Otuhuhu. was submitted yesterday to the ratepayers, about one-third of whom voted. The proposal was rejected by 419 votes lo 201. Higher Steamer Fares The Canadian-Australasian Line has announced an immediate increase in fares from Sydney to Pacific ports of 33 1-3 per cent. The increase applies to fares to Suva, Honolulu and North America, hut fares to New Zealand are not affected. Successful Concert Eulogistic references to the recent school concert were made by members of the Hamilton Technical High School Board of Managers at a meeting held last night. It was decided to express the board's appreciation to members of the staff and pupils responsible l'or ; the effort. Memorial Tablet Unveiled A tablet erected by the Huntly , Borough Council at the entrance of the Town Hall in memory of the 43 ■ men who lost their lives in the Ralph's mine disaster on September 12, 1914, was unveiled by the Mayor, Mr W. C. E. George, on the 25th anniversary. The Town Hall now stands on the site of the disaster. University Examinations The annual terms examinations for the Auckland University College will he held at Hamilton from October 9 to October 20, inclusive. Annual degree and professional examinations for the New Zealand University will be held in Hamilton from October 30 to November 17, inclusive. Assistance From Builders A decision to place more than 100 employees at the disposal of the Public Works Department, to assist with urgent defence projects, was made at a special general meeting of the Hamilton Master Builders and Contractors’ Association held last night. The men are all carpenters or foremen carpenters. Reserve Coal Supplies Authority lias been given to the house manager of the Waikato Hospital lo purchase a reserve stock of 250 tons of coal. The decision, made by the purchasing committee of the Waikato Hospital Board, was approved at the meeting of the board to-day. Reserve stocks of fuel will be procured for all outlying hospitals also. Jewish New Year The Jewish New Year, 5700, began today, September 14. The Jevqlsh calendar, being both solar and lunar, is very complicated. The New Year does not always begin on the same date, and the number of days in the year varies. The years are numbered from the year of the Creation. Three Bhifts On Farm Three sons of Mr Charles Cooper, a farmer, of Patutahi (Poverty Bay), are working day and night over three shifts of eight hours in an endeavour to complete preparation for sowing spring crops in case they are called for military service. They are working their tractor on three shifts and the machine has been going continuously, stopping only while the driver rests for a meal and for the refuelling of the machine. Talk on Daffodils The monthly garden talk inaugurated by the Hamilton Horticultural Society will be held tonight at 8 p.m. in the lounge of the Y.M.C.A. The speaker will be Mr H. M. Hammond, his subject being, “The Culture of Daffodils.” As there are many keen and enthusiastic growers of these beautiful and popular flowers in Hamilton, there should be a good attendance. These talks are open to all flower lovers whether members of the society or not. Hospital Without Bunshlno . “ There Is not one window, except those in the kitchen and scullery, which takes in the sunshine,” said Mrs H. M. Wilson at the meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board to-day, when asking that repairs and the addition of a sunporch for the Pio Pio institution of the board be approved. The matter was referred to the House ani Finance Committee. A request made at the last meeting of the board by Mrs Wilson that the Pio Pio residence be altered so as to accommodate seven beds because the doctor was being hampered by the lack of adequate hospital facilities was rejected by the committee as, owing to the international situation, the board was not in a position to undertake the work.
