FAT STOCK SALES another rise in beef BEST PRICES FOR YEARS AUCKLAND, Thursday Beef prices again rose at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday. The rise brought rates to the highest levels for many years. In that time levels have risen by 12s per 1001 b. Mutton, pork and bacon were quoted more cheaply and lambs were steady. Prime quality veal was in short supply and increased in price. Steers sold to £2l, the best price at Westfield since 1037, and 30s higher than the best last week. Average quotations were 2s to 3s higher. The range was from 28s to 4Gs per 1001 b. Cows sold to £l4 17s Od, which was a small rise on the last week's best offer. A large entry of mutton failed to hold the market. Wethers made to 42s 6d. compared with 43s 0d before, and ewes were 2s lower with bids to 33s Od. An average lamb entry sold at late rates, the highest bid being ©no of 20s Od. An average veal entry comprised mainly plain calves, prime quality again increasing in price. Runners sold to £ll 12s Od, .against £ll, and vealers were quoted to £8 17s, losing 235. Baconcrs realised to £4 0s and averaged 64d to GAd per lb. Corresponding figures for porkers were £2 10s and 6id to 7d per lb. The porker quotation was a further drop on last week’s best offer. S. Allen, Tirau, selling to £l9 ss. A bid of £l9 was received for a lot from Mr R. A. Bent, Putaruru. To £l7 was bid for the beef penned on behalf of Mr G. Johnstone, Matamata. Offers of £l6 12s 6d and £ls 15s were received for lots from the Fairview Land Company, Maungatawhiri. A line of cows and heifers from Mr R. Hall, Wiri, brought bids to £l4 12s 6d. Other quotable lots w’ere sold on account of Mr W. McLean, Walton, to £l3 2s 6d. Dalgety and Co. The weekly stock sale of Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, was held at Westfield yesterday when the yarding totalled 107 head, comprising 45 steers and 62 cows and heifers. The yarding last week was 100 head. The quality of the ox beef was again first-class and, with a keen demand prevailing, values showed a decided rise. For a small offering of cow ? and heifer beef the demand was also keen and quotations showed a sharp rise on last week’s rates. No extra heavy bullocks were yarded. Sheep.—We had a big yarding. Competition for prime wethers was 6teady and value-s for this class ruled on a par with last week. Plain and unfinished wethers were dull of sale. For a big offering of ewes values eased about 3s a head on last \yeek’s quotations. Calves.—An average yarding came forward, a keen sale resulting. Prime quality calves were again in short supply and values again showed a further rise. Plain and unfinished sold readily, with values firming on late quotations. Pigs.—A large yarding was penned. IA steady sale resulted, with values easing appreciably on last week's quotations. Store pigs were also easier of sale. Alfred Buckland and Sons Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, reports:— Beef.—We penned 259 head of fat eattle against 231 last week, comprising 124 steers and 135 cows and heifers. Wc again had a good yarding of ox beef and selling under a keen demand values improved by about 3s per 1001 b. Cows and heifers also improved on recent quotations. Extra choice ox sold to 40s per 1001 b.; choice and prime, 43s to 455; secondary and plain, 40s to 425; primo young cow and heifer hcef, 40s to 425; ordinary cow beef, 33s to 30s; extra heavy prime steers ranged in price from £l7 10s lo £l9 ss, for steers from Mr J. Calves.—We had an average yarding, the majority being small and bobby calves. Heavy prime runners and vealers were in very short supply. Competition for these was keen and values showed a rise on last week's quotations. Unfinished and small calves sold readily at late rates. Heavy prime runners, £9 to £ll 12s Od, the latter price realised for an outstanding steer sold on account of Mr W. Main. Hautapu. Lighter runners, £6 to £8 10s: heavy prime vealers, £7 10s to £8 15s; medium, £6 to £7 2s; light, £4 15s to £5 14s; smaller, £3 10s to £4 10s; small, 18s to £3 ss; rough calves, £1 to £1 18s; bobby calves, 2s to 16s. A total of 251 calves was sold. Pigs.—There was an increased offering. Bidding was not spirited, and except in odd instances for extra prime quality baconers, values for all classes of fats were lower. Choppers made £2 os to £4; extra heavy prime baconers, £4 is to £4 9s; medium, £3 12s to £3 16s; light. £3 2s to £3 7s; heavy porkers, £2 13s to £2 lGs; medium, £2 6s to £2 10s; light, £1 18s to £2 2s: small and unfinished, £1 12s to £1 10s; stores, £1 9s to £1 15s; slips, £1 2s to £1 Os; weaners, 12s to £l. Baconers averaged 6}d to 6£d per lb. and porkers sold from Old to 7d per lb. A total of 510 pigs was sold. Pigs.—We had an increased yarding, for which the demand was not so keen, there being a drop in values on last week’s quotations. Choppers, £1 to £3 15s; heavy and medium baconers, £3 6s to £4 3s; light baconers and heavy porkers, £2 16s to £3 3s; medium porkers and light porkers, £2 4s to £2 14s; small, £1 15s to £2 2s; unfinished, £1 10s to £1 14s. A small yarding of store pigs sold at easier values. Large stores, £1 6s to £1 13s; slips, 17s to £1 3s; weaners, 10s lo £1 Is.
Calves.—Our entry was an average yarding. There was a shortage of good quality calves. The demand was very keen, and throughout values were firm on last week’s quotations. Runners, £5 to £8 17s for runners from Ranginui Estate; heavy vealers, £6 10s to £7 12s 6d; medium, £5 10s to £6 7s Od; light, £4 5s lo £5 ss; smaller, £3 6s to £4 4s; small, £2 to £3 3s; rough calves, £1 5s to £2 10s; fresh dropped, 7s to 13s. Some well-done calves one month old made up to £4.
