COAL GAS

DOES AWAY WITH PETROL NEW BRITISH ENGINE British members of Parliament are shortly to be shown new types of motor-car engines driven by high-c-jmpression coal gas which, it is -•laimed, operates as efficiently as engines driven by either oil or petrol. Evolved at the national gas and oil ■ngine company's works at Ashton-jnder-Lyne, England, it is believed hat the new engine may well real unionise the fuel aspect of road ransport. The importance of the development 1 the event of war, when supplies of mported fuel may be precarious, is nilised in Government circles, where keen interest in the, new engines is ••mg shown. A scheme for ration'r petrol in war time was announced cently. Already the United Kingdom Gas i.rporation is investigating the possibility ol' setting up gas-filling stations in various parts of the country. These will re-fuel the gas-driven lorries ami gasdriven motor vehicles from cylinders containing compressed gas or from gas compressors on precisely the same principle as that used in putting air into tyres. The whole operition occupies only a few seconds. Somebody lias been writing to a London weekly to ask which is the least harmful form of smoking. The editor refused to commit himself. Per-

haps he isn’t a smoker, and really didn’t know, although Editors are supposed to know everything. Had he been a New Zealand Editor, he’d have had no difficulty in answering that, question. He’d simply have said—at any rate in effect—“ Smoke ‘ toasted ’ because in that case it doesn't matter a button whether you puff pipe or cigarettes or both, this tobacco’s 0.K." And he’d have been dead right, because whether you smoke “ the pipe of peace " or “ roll your own ” toasted is so pure and comparatively free from nicotine (the toasting eliminates the stuff) that you can indulge in any number of pipes or cigarettes without fear of their letting you down. Yes, toasting does make a difference, in fact it makes all the difference, whether you smoke Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish, Navy (bit No. (Bulldog), Riverhoad Cold or Desert Gold. They're all unapproaehed for flavour and bouquet, and are the only genuine toasted brands.
