KNITTED BALACLAVA
The following instructions for knitting a balaclava supplied by Miss M. E. Robieson, acting secret- i ary of the Wellington Nursing Division, were used by the Nursing Division during the Great War. Take four ply fingering, three ply wheeling, 2 skeins or lib, making 5 caps. No. 8 needles are used. Cast on 90 stitches, knit 3 purl 3 plain for 5 inches, take off 2.1 stitches on to another needle, knit 38 plain rows (19 ribs) in the remaining 69 stitches. Knit 15, knit 2 together, plain to end of row. Repeat until 42 stitches are left on the needle, then knit 9, knit 2 together, knit plain to end of row. Repeat until 25 stitches are left. Now reduce by knitting 2 together 3 times in every row, until 3 stitches are left. Pick up each side 114 stitches, including 21 on the other needle. Knit 3 purl 3 plain for 2 inches. Cast off tightly and sew up.
