OTOROHANGA NOTES
QUEEN CARNIVAL DANCE A dance to assist the funds of the Queen Carnival was held in the Otoro- . hanga Town Hall recently. A .Maori orchestra supplied excellent dance music. During an interval in the dancing, the queens, Miss N. Luxmoore (Sports Queen), Mrs Morgan (Maori Queen), Miss J. Johnson (Business Queen), and Miss L. Symes (Country Queen), were presented. BRIDGE AND MAH JONGG Mrs K. Liddy entertained at a bridge and mah jongg evening ,at her home recently to assist the funds of the Sports Queen. The rooms were decorated with daffodils and grape hyacinths. Mrs Liddy received her guests in a frock of pin spot muslin. The prizes were won by Mr T. Lear and Mrs Ashden. Amongst those present were:—Mesdames W. ltust, T. Lear, W. Castley, C. Ashden, W. Rust, junr., E. Tong, A. Addis, E. Taylor, R. Oliver, A. Fleming, M. Ingram, A. Thompson, W. J. Patterson, E. Rhodes, C. Jackson, K. Liddy. Misses N. Luxmoore, A. White, B. Matthews, S. Hopkirk.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTES AT LICHFIELD The Lichfield Institute held its monthly meeting recently, Mrs Wooderson being in the chair. It was decided to hold a competition for the best pair of men's knitted sox, these to be afterwards sent to the Red Cross if needed. As most of the members are within walking distance of the hall it was resolved to hold the meetings as usual The motto for the month was: “In disagreeing it is not necessary to be disagreeable.” and the roll call: “ Improvements I would like to see In Lichfield,” brought forth many suggestions. The competition, “ afternoon tea cloth from 50lb flour bag,” was won by Mrs Ranger with Mrs Burgess and Mrs Wooderson Lying for second place. The hostesses were Mesdames Lynn, Boyles and Miss Ranger. AT TE HOE Mrs Thompson presided over a good attendance at the September meeting of the Te Hoe Women’s Institute, and welcomed Miss Ida Cocks as a new member. Mrs Cuff was elected to \ fill the vacancy on the committee caused by Miss Le Heron leaving the district. The motto was supplied by Mrs Paton. The roll call, “ Wearing j something to represent a book title,” was well responded to. The Women’s Institute competition, “ Morning apron,” was won by Mrs Brown, with Mrs Guff second, and Mrs McGuire, was first, Mrs D. Twining second, and Mrs Guff third in the flower competition. Mrs Farmer won a beautiful quilt. , Mrs Taylor read the golden thread, “ The career of Miss Jean Batten.” Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Buckley, D. Twining, and Taylor. Mrs McQueen and Miss Laing also won competitions. I AT OHINEWAI The monthly meeting of the Ohinewai Women’s Institute, was held recently when Mrs Hill presided. Miss M. McGaughran played a piano solo and Miss M. Webb gave the golden thread reading. The competition results were as follows:—Best bloom, Mrs Hill, 1; printed card, Mrs Burroughs 1, Miss E. Hosking 2; hostess competition, Mrs Bidgly 1. The hostesses for the day were Mrs McGaughran and Mrs Fisher.
